Installing Unexpectedly

This document shows how to install Unexpectedly from the disk image you've downloaded or fetched via other means.


System requirements


Installing Unexpectedly on a single computer

To manually install Unexpectedly on a Mac running macOS Mojave or later, follow these instructions:

1Double-click the Unexpectedly.dmg disk image file to mount it on the desktop.
2Copy the Unexpectedly.app application to the /Applications folder.


Installing Unexpectedly on a remote computer

An installation package of Unexpectedly is available here. It makes it possible to install this software on a remote computer. Depending on the version of macOS you're running, there are two possible methods for remote installation:

Installing with the installer(8) tool

Download the installation package at this link.

Copy the Unexpectedly.pkg distribution to the remote computer.

Note: If no file sharing services (SMB, AFP, etc.) are running on the remote computer, you will have to physically move to the computer to make the copy and run the installation.
3Connect to the remote computer using ssh (or telnet).
4Move to the directory where the Unexpectedly.pkg distribution has been copied.

Type the following command:

$ sudo /usr/sbin/installer -pkg Unexpectedly.pkg -target /
6Press Return.

Installing with Apple Remote Desktop

Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) is a "suite of desktop management tools, enabling administrators to manage networks of macOS system from a central location". Amongst other things, it allows you to remotely install packages or metapackages.

Read page 109 of chapter 8 of the ARD documentation to learn how to perform a remote installation of packages.


Uninstalling Unexpectedly

To uninstall Unexpectedly:

Drag the Unexpectedly.app application to the Trash.

Choose Finder > Empty Trash….
